Keeping Hollywood Running

Local 871 represents a variety of crafts, which, despite their differences, share one attribute: we keep Hollywood organized. Whether on set or behind the scenes, Local 871 is the invisible machine that keeps the gears turning.

The Script Supervisor works with every department to maintain continuity. They’re filmmakers who contribute an assurance of correct dialog, complete coverage, maintenance of the visual axis, and consistency of sets, props, hair, makeup, and wardrobe. They are the eyes, ears, voice, and memory of the editor.

Teleprompter Operators are the display technicians who control the flow of words delivered to talent as they speak naturally into the camera, either on scripted sets or during live broadcasts.

Production Coordinators and Assistant Production Coordinators run the Production Office, interacting with every department on a project and the vendors they use. They deal with production companies and major studios, legal and insurance departments, unions, agents, managers, caterers, air conditioning - whatever needs to be done, the Coordinators are there. They are the hub of the action behind the scenes and the go-to folks who help make it happen.

Art Department Coordinators function in a similar capacity for the Art Department. Art Department Coordinator is of invaluable assistance to the Production Designer and is the reason the entire Art Department can function.

Accountants are responsible for creating and tracking budgets for feature films and television productions. This includes paying cast & crew properly according to their union & guild contracts as well as federal & state guidelines. They open vendor accounts, process invoices, review credit card charges & petty cash, keep the books reconciled, track insurance claims and often track multiple tax incentives.

Script Coordinators serve as the liaison between the Writers’ Room and Production. They track the show’s continuity; proof, format, and distribute all story areas, outlines, scripts, and color revisions; and handle studio and WGA paperwork.

Writers’ Room Assistants keep, organize, and distill daily notes from room discussion, serve as the brain trust of the Writers’ Room, maintain the boards, and compile beat sheets for outlines.

In the Sports Venues, Stage Managers are the liaisons for producers and talent, keeping talent on track during broadcasts, and prepping for pre- and post game interviews. Graphics Coordinators help facilitate all those fantastic on-screen graphics throughout the game.

Together, our members make up the dynamic behind-the-scenes machine that keeps the gears in Hollywood turning.
