IATSE Local 871 History

From One to Many

Since our beginnings in 1958, Local 871 has grown from a local of Script Supervisors to a merged local of over 2,000 members. Our members work in mediums ranging from Film and Television to Sport Venues and Live Events, and contribute to the success of many award-winning productions each year.

OUR STORY

1958

Originally covering only the Script Supervisor craft, Local 871's charter began in 1958 with 131 members. The Local grew out of the "Script Clerks Guild," which was founded in 1937 by Thelma McFate Preece.
1997

The Teleprompter Operators joined our ranks in 1997, as our membership truly started its growth.
2000

Our biggest change came in 2000 when Local 717 merged with Local 871, bringing Production Accountants, Assistant Production Accountants, Production Coordinators, Assistant Production Coordinators, and Art Department Coordinators into our jurisdiction. We also moved into the offices on Chandler Boulevard.
2002

In 2002 we took in Stage Managers, as well as Font and Graphics Coordinators within the sports venues
2007

In 2007, we became known as known as "IATSE Local 871, Script Supervisors/Continuity, Coordinators, Accountants and Allied Production Specialists Guild."
2015

In 2015, we relocated to our beautiful new space on Magnolia Boulevard.
2018

In 2018, Local 871 organized the Script Coordinators and Writers' Assistants, finally getting these hard-working crafts the representation they deserved. With a current membership of nearly 2,500 professionals, the experiences of every member of our diverse crafts tell the story of who we are. Our members fulfill an important role in the creation of each film, television program, commercial, stage or sports event on which they work.
